CAD to BIM conversion — your DWG archive as a coordinated Revit model
Flat DWGs from three different decades, drawn by several hands to no single standard. We turn that into one model that can be designed in, and tell you where the archive disagreed with itself.
CAD to BIM conversion
What we start from
A vector DWG archive: the drawings your practice or the building owner already holds, typically produced across several projects and several decades, with layer standards that changed halfway through and xrefs pointing at paths that no longer exist. You do not need to sort the material before sending it, because sorting it is part of the job.
Where the effort actually goes
The modelling is the straightforward part. What decides whether the result is usable is reconciliation: two archive drawings of the same floor that disagree by 150 mm, a section that does not match the plan it was cut from, a level datum that changed between drawing packages without anyone renaming the file. We resolve those conflicts, and where a conflict cannot be resolved from the material we flag it in writing rather than modelling a guess and letting you discover it on site.
Twenty-three years of building design and construction is what makes that judgement possible. Knowing which of two contradictory drawings is likely to be the built condition is not a Revit skill.
What the DWG source gives you
Measurable geometry, which is the reason this service costs less per building than the same work from flat PDFs. Where the archive is dimensioned and internally consistent, the model is built to the dimensions given and the result carries the accuracy of the original drawings. Where blocks and layer names are consistent enough to be relied on, they also carry schedule data across rather than being retyped.
What you get
A Revit model at LOD 200–350 as agreed, built in your template, with levels, grids and wall types set up so the model carries the project rather than illustrating it. Plans, sections and elevations are generated from the model and coordinated, not drafted independently. Where accuracy is limited by the source material, the limits are documented in a short accompanying note.
Delivered into your process, not just to your inbox
The model arrives named, coded and structured the way your project runs. Where that project runs to BS EN ISO 19650, files come in as information containers with the naming, status and revision fields your common data environment validates on upload, and the IFC export is checked against the exchange requirements rather than exported on defaults. Where it does not, you get a clean conventional structure that can be mapped onto one later without re-issuing anything.
Common questions
What if the archive drawings contradict each other?
That is the normal condition and handling it is most of the work. Conflicts are resolved from the material where possible, and where they cannot be we flag them in writing rather than modelling a guess.
Why is this cheaper than converting from PDFs?
Because a vector DWG contains measurable geometry. Nothing has to be inferred from printed output, so the interpretation time that dominates a PDF conversion largely disappears.
Will the model be built in our Revit template?
Yes. Send the template and the model is built inside it, with your levels, grids, wall types and naming. Without one you get a clean conventional structure that can be mapped onto yours later.
What level of detail do you deliver?
LOD 200 to 350, agreed before we start, so that the model carries the project rather than illustrating it.
Do you work to ISO 19650?
Where your project runs to it, yes. Files arrive as information containers with the naming, status and revision fields your common data environment validates on upload, and the IFC export is checked against the exchange requirements rather than exported on defaults.
